Young Matthew Wilson punched the air with delight at the news that he had set fastest time on stage 3 of this Rally Ireland to move into the lead. That 3rd stage, Glenboy, had fast sections and also tough bumpy places. Kevin Lynch had a real good go at the stage and was perhaps slightly disappointed to have dropped 13s to Wilson and 4s to Boland.  Kevin saying “We were steady enough, had a go, it was a hairy stage but the tyres worked. There were some fairly nasty bumps and jumps, not good for my back. There was one junction where the arrows seemed to be pointing slightly downwards and I thought maybe it was tighter than what it actually was, we could have made a few seconds there”.

Freddy Loix was slightly down the time sheets on that 3rd stage, the Belgian driver feeling that the stage was too quick for the car, and he just ran out of revs. Swedish driver Daniel Carlsson showed some real world championship form on that one and left the group N opposition gasping for breath.

Early news from stage 4 indicates that Kevin Lynch was 6s faster than Matthew Wilson with Eamonn Boland a further 13s back.  The bad news for local fans is that Garry Jennings has reportedly retired his Lancer with gearbox trouble while Shaun Gallagher’s Lancer is also in gearbox bother.

News from earlier is that Brian O’Mahony has retired his Ford Puma S1600 when he got caught out on shiny tar at the piece of road past the lake on stage 1 and hit a wall.
