A huge downpour including hailstones hit the leading
crews as they struggled through stage 4, Castlenagor, and misted up
windscreens were the order of the day as well as slippy roads.
James Cullen was fastest through that 4th
stage despite his Lancer showing signs of anti lag trouble and as well
as that James caught and passed a slower car. 2nd fastest
through that stage 4 was Niall Maguire, 6s shy of Cullen’s time with
Eugene Donnelly a further 2s down.
James Gillen lost a bit of time and dropped from 6th
place when he put his Subaru off the road. Andrew Stewart’s Lancer
suffered a puncture and he dropped 30 to 40s. Paul Gallagher was one
of the many slowed with a misted up windscreen.
In stage 5 it was Eugene Donnelly who was fastest from
Niall Maguire, with James Cullen 3rd fastest. These times
are of course provisional.
Further retirements include John McKeown whose Escort
Cosworth got a holed radiator when he caught a slower car. John was
leading his class before he retired.
It is early days to be talking about class results and
the Quinn Group Border championship but it is interesting that Adrian
Fox is leading his class after the first loop of stages, while there
is no word of his biggest rival for the championship, Shane Feely.
Some further class leaders after that opening loop of
stages included Paul Gallagher in class 11. Patrick Bonar in class 12.
Aidan Friel class 6.
Antony O’Brien
class 7. Eamonn McCafferty class 5.
