Provisionally Kevin Lynch was fastest through the opening stage of
this 2nd day of the Shell Donegal International Rally, We
say provisionally as there was a certain amount of confusion over
the time on Andrew Nesbitt’s card. Hopefully this will be sorted out
later on. None of the lead drivers reported any major dramas on
that Brenagh stage. There was a very slight skiff of rain just
before the first cars arrived, but most competitors were on “a cut
slick racing tyre”, and speeds were high. Lynch said at stage
finish “Yes we had a real good run”.
Young Welshman Gareth Jones seemed to have at last got his Impreza
WRC on full song following its turbo troubles, and although he is
well off the leaderboard Gareth set a time which would see him up
amongst the top runners. Hugh Martin Doherty was 18th
overnight in his Impreza WRC, but seems to have electrical problems
with the gearbox this morning and may have withdrawn.
In Group N this morning Shaun Gallagher was again fastest, and that
was despite Shaun picking too soft a compound tyre and also his seat
moving about. As can be seen above Seamus Leonard is 2nd
gpN. Seamus was 9s slower than Gallagher on that Brenagh stage. Roy
White is 3rd group N. Garry Jennings 4th.
Willie Fannin 5th. Andrew Stewart 6th.
Looking back to the overnight positions – some of the class leaders
included Keith McElhinney in his Civic leading class 3. Young
Peter Wilson, also in a Civic, leading class 2. Andrew Hegarty in
his Puma led cl.5. Trevor Graham in his Suzuki Swift led cl.1.
Phil Collins led the National part of the rally by 8s from the
similar Escort of Robbie Peoples. Damien Gallagher was a further 8s
back in 3rd. Ivan Stewart 4th. John Dalton 5th.
Camillus Bradley 6th. Seamus McCusker 7th.
Padraic Price dirivng Eugene Donnelly’s old Celica was 8th.
Brian Brogan 9th and Drew Hunter 10th.
John O’Donnell was leading the Juniors in his Corolla from S
McElhinney and Martin O’Donnell, both in Civics, 2nd and
3rd.
