Andrew Browne maintained his lead through special stage 2 on this Castle Rally although he was 2s slower than his first stage, his Derrick Jobb hired Celica showing some signs of clutch slip as well as brake fade in this afternoon’s scorching hot conditions.

Padraig Price improved on his first stage by nearly 4s but still didn’t dent Browne’s lead.  Padraig is driving the ex Eugene Donnelly Celica and it also exhibited some signs of brake fade.  James Foley maintained his 3rd place and group N lead. James reported a good run through the stage although at one point arrived into a foggy haze of cement dust – the cement having been put down to cover an oil spillage.

Peter Wilson in 4th is 2nd in Group N.  This is young Peter’s first run in 4 wheel drive, and he said after his first stage that he couldn’t go any faster.  However, he has by nearly 4s…..

Mickey Curran in 5th is being very cool about leading the 2 wheel drive category, but surely it must be hot and heavy stuff in that Escort.  Joe Curran in 6th reckons his Mitsubishi seems to lose power about a mile into the stage.  Tom Holton in 7th had a repeat of his first stage fuel starvation problems. He thought then that the car was low in fuel.  He says now he was definitely wrong, that it is a technical fault of some sort.

Jack Sleator in 8th feels that he is driving his hired group A Subaru just as hard as the car will go, that there is nothing left in it.  Adrian Quinn in 9th feels that he’s losing time somewhere, just doesn’t know where.  John Kelly rounds off the top 10 and he’s had a smooth run so far.  Mark Alcorn in his Corolla is the fastest of the class 11 runners so far. James Cassidy, top runner in the Sleator championship, was 10s slower than time, reckons he still should be OK.

Paul & James McCann were also slower, their Escort Cosworth suffering a broken front drive shaft.  Gerry Maher struggled through the stage, his Escort suffering a broken gearbox.

In the Super 1600 class Charlie McAree in his 206 leads from John Quinn.  Jane O’Connor hit a kerb with her Civic when the car in front dislodged a bale, it rolled in front of the Honda and in swerving to avoid it she clipped the kerb. Happily got away with no damage.

John Carter is having a difficult time adjusting to the Connie Smith Sierra Cosworth, it is his first time in 4 wheel drive and he said. “Its like being back in school”.  Gordon Rogers retired his Escort on the first corner of the first stage with a broken gearbox.  Mark Courtney didn’t get started the first stage because of mechanical problems with his Celica.  Mick Shaw withdrew his Lancer because his co driver got a stomach upset.  Mick is now doing OO duties.
