Glen Allen started the 2nd leg of this Sperrins Rally in a very
determined mood, hell bent on giving Kevin Lynch a run for his
money. At the end of that Glenshane test, a lot looser and
cut up than it was on the first run, Allen's Escort WRC stopped
the clocks on exactly the same time as Lynch had a few minutes
before. Both cars had recorded 4m19s. The next best
time was Kevin O'Kane's 4.27. Allen commented at stage
finish when he saw Lynch's time "We had a good run, that's as
much as there is in it, its going to be hard to beat that
man". Lynch had said "Everything went well, but
can anybody change this back of mine". Third placed
James Gillen was just slightly off the pace of the 2 in front with
a time of 4.30. James reporting no real difficulty.
Kieran Shaw felt his car was better, saying "We're getting
there, wee bit by wee bit". Robin Philips was still
under a bit of pressure, in pain from his wrenched back, but
reported his Corolla WRC to be all well. Sean Haveron felt
he had gone hard but was disappointed with his time. The
reason for Gary White's retirement earlier was a broken main shaft
in the gearbox.
Seamus Donnelly was fastest of the gpN runners through that 6th
stage, saying "That's rallying, it was great, I was driving
like an oul woman earlier". In overall gpN terms Jonny
McKenna is still top of the tree, but he slowed slightly in
Glenshane, reached the main road and jumped out of the car to find
out why it was so down on power. The answer was quickly
apparent, a squashed exhaust pipe blocking the engine breather.
Jonny was hoping to get that sorted before stage 7. Sean Devine
set a good gpN time, as did Raymond Mason, the Castlereagh man
saying "That's as quick as I ever drove this car".
Dickie Curran finished the stage with his Lancer steering column
rattling about on the in car adjuster.
Still waiting for times from the 2 wheel drive brigade, but Greg
McCormack did say that he had trouble earlier getting the gears.
News of further retirements include Andy Cochrane (Escort) who
reportedly rolled on stage 4. Andy Hawthorne broke the
steering on his Astra, also in stage 4.
