It is fitting indeed that Jonny Milner has won the Pirelli
British Championship here on his home rally, and the icing
on the cake for the Driffield man is winning the rally
outright as well. This Trackrod Rally with the stages
through the beautiful Yorkshire forests has been a
particularly successful event on its first time as a
counter in the British Rally Championship. When Jonny and
co driver Nicky Beech arrived into Pickering service for
the final time, Jonny, who has tried so hard for 13 years
to win the British title was surprisingly cool, and
observed "We sort of forgot we were leading the rally,
just got on with the job. We were built up for a big fight
with Justin before the rally, and that was over so early,
we just had to settle back and do the job. Of course, it is
a very special day for myself, Nicky and the
team""
There was a brilliant battle for 2nd place between Julian
Reynolds and Steve Petch, with Reynolds getting ahead 2
stages before the finish. Julian said "We had a bit of
a go, it was hard work, the power steering packed up
towards the end and Steve Petch was going very hard as
well. A good battle". Nigel Heath in the Subaru
WRC got the hammer down to just get in front of Guy Wilks
for 5th place. Phil Morgan retained his gpN lead
despite putting his Subaru on its roof briefly in Pike
Hill, but he had enough in hand over Jeremy y Nolan to keep
his advantage.
It was a significant day as well for Gwyndaf Evans and
Chris Patterson and the MG team to win the Super 1600
category and finish 2nd in the points for the series.
The category in the Championship goes, of course, to
Peugeot, and although they have had a miserable event this
time, the entire team has put up a thoroughly professional
and successful showing during the year. Gwyndaf reported a
problem with the throttle over the last couple of stages
and said "We had to do a fix up job ourselves with a
bungie strap and couldn't get full throttle, but it was a
good results. 3 wins on the Pirelli BRC this year and we
are still developing the car. We have something positive to
work at".
Just outside the above leaderboard we have young Simon
Hughes in 11th, Simon hampered throughout the event because
his Clio is fitted with a tarmac spec engine. Finally for
now, many thanks to all who helped us with the RallyNews
and congratulations to Rod Parkin and all the Trackrod
organisers. BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON
