All the drivers reported hairraising moments over today's
slippy stages, but it's Michael Barrable keeping his act
together best to set the pace, the Dubliner fastest over
each of the first 3 stages. Dunlop Championship
leader, and first on the road, Niall Maguire, looked very
hot and sweaty when his Subaru arrived in here to service.
The Monaghan man saying "I think we had the wrong
tyres on, very slippy and patchy". David
Armstrong told us "Very hard to judge the speed".
While Michael Barrable said "Very treacherous, as soon
as you get grip it's away again".
Drivers in trouble include Jimmy Lamber who has lost a
mountain of time with alternator trouble. Patrick
Elliott had that accident on the first stage but kept going
through stages 2 and 3, setting respectable times despite
the crumpled state of his car. Liam McCarthy in the
Corolla WRC had a big spin in stage 2, took it easy in
stage 3. No sign here at service of former NI
Champion George Robinson. Paddy O'Reilly also missing.
Eddie Kinirons lost 6th gear in his Celica a few miles from
the end of stage 3, still setting good times. Paul Kelly,
with Paul Hughes on the pace notes, reports being held up
by slower cars. Martin O'Connell, with Sean Mullally on the
notes, has crumpled the front of his Escort with an
accident on stage 1 and another in stage 3.
In Group N Roy White continues to lead gpN in his Evo7, Roy
reports "a bit of understeer but going hard
enough". GpN Dunlop Championship leader Aaron
McHale told us of an overshoot on stage 3 and still being
relatively cautious. More news later.
BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON (www.rallynews.net) (Our thanks to
Sean White for the excellent ham sandwiches!) Much
appreciated.
