Rally leader Mark Higgins was fortunate to get away with no real time loss, despite his Focus WRC sustaining a puncture. Super 1600 leader Gwyndaf Evans did well to stay within his time limit when he had to fix his MG’s gear linkage, and still retained the lead of the S1600 category. Not so lucky was young Kris Meeke, he put his Puma off the road when battling Guy Wilks for S1600 runner up position, and although we hear Kris is still running, he is now virtually last on the rally. The race at the front looked fairly settled going into stage 10, Chirdonhead, but Mark Higgins’ puncture could so easily have changed that. He hurled his Focus down the last 6 miles of the stage to only drop a fraction of a second to Jonny Milner, so that the positions remained unchanged at the front. Third placed Tapio Laukkanen is content now just to hold position, and the Finnish driver’s comment "I just drive to finish now". Swedish driver Johan Kressner was in 5th place going into Chirdonhead and despite smashing a side window of his Subaru against a rock he still managed to get ahead of Steve Petch in the Hyundai to take 4th position. The top 6 is rounded off by Nik Elsmore, Nik driving extremely well to lie 2nd in gpN, although looking over his shoulder all the time at the hard charging Oscar Svedlund, and Leon Pesticcio in similar Mitsubishis. Outside the leaderboard - Justin Dale was well pleased with his time, 13.35.1 and that was despite his Peugeot’s limited slip diff not working. His team mate Rory Galligan now reports his Super 1600 Peugeot having no 3rd gear and still has rear brake troubles. Rory nearly a minute slower than Justin on 14.32.2. James Thompson recorded a time of 13.58.0 and found the stage very slippy. Rory Galligan is approximately 18th overall: Justin Dale 24th: Martin Sansom 25th and James Thompson 26th. In the Gateshead National 206 Rally (after SS9) Garry Jennings was leading by 8s from Chris Moore with Mike Faulkner 3rd. Austin McHale’s son Gareth did well to hold on to 10th when his 206 broke a front suspension strut which punched up into the bonnet. Alan Barr continues to lead the Gateshead Rally from Phil Walker.
