Adrian McElvaney was the surprise package of the first stage. The Monaghan man is fresh down from the Ulster Rally and the slippy roads up there which left him well prepared for today's treacherous conditions. In addition, Adrian caught and passed Willie Fannin in the stage, his Lancer spitting flames from the back as power steering fluid did its best to ignite itself.

First on the road Tim McNulty commented about the conditions "v v slippy, we took it easy in places, trying to get an idea of wher the bad places were. I was maybe just a bit cautious.

Other stories included Enda Keenan's Escort having clutch and gearbox trouble. Pat White has also gearbox trouble, plus two spins. Mervyn Wedlock damaged a front wheel on his Escort.

Damien Cole reckons he should have been a gear higher. Mickey Cadden's Sierra had a misfire. James Cribben - 2 big spins
