Main
changes over the last few
stages of this Roush Manx Rally
included David Mann retiring
his Subaru from 2nd
place and Kenny McKinstry
continuing his charge from an
overnight 35th to
finish 6th overall.
Melvyn Evans took the
lead of the rally early on and
did a really solid job right
through, and told us here at
the Grandstand finish “Mind
you I nearly threw it all away
on the last stage when I slid
wide on a cattle grid and
damaged a steering arm. Lucky
not to burst a wheel. But it
was a good rally, brilliant in
fact.”
The 37 year old garage
proprietor from Lampeter
continued “My main difficulty
was judging the pace. Running
at the front I was never sure
how fast the cars behind were
going”.
Second placed John
Price, who was joined at the
finish ramp by his 3 year old
daughter Stephanie, told us
“I’m well pleased. I
decided to have a real go over
the final loop of stages and it
paid off. You never know with
rallies here on the Island what
way it will finish”.
Kenny
McKinstry was obviously one of
the main talking points of the
rally following his charge back
up the field, and should
maintain his lead in the Kumho
ANCRO championship with 65
points, as against Perrott on
64.
Perrott eased back
towards the end of the rally as
his Escort WRC developed
various suspension maladies.
Kenny commented at the
finish “It was good fun, but
I hadn’t a lot left towards
the end”. As the Banbridge man congratulated winner Evans, he
went on to say “Once again a
brilliant rally”.
There
were several different
championships at stake here
today – rally winner Melvyn
Evans extends his lead in the
Get Connected championship.
John Price takes maximum
points in the National
Tarmacadam series, but Bob
Fowden will maintain overall
points lead.
Fowden slowed over the
last few stages when his
Lancer’s rear brakes glazed
up, but otherwise he had a good
run to take overall gpN today.
Kevin Stephens was the
highest placed Mitsubishi
Challenge GpN car. As this
RallyNews goes to press the
Historic Championship cars are
still on the stages.
Last we heard Dessie
Nutt was leading the Historics
despite his Porsche needing an
overnight gearbox problem
repaired. Adrian Kermode was 2nd
Historic while Ernie Graham led
the Post Historics from Nick
Whale with Charles Golding 3rd.
Sorry – no more space –
well done to John Skinner and
all his team for a superb Roush
Manx Rally. BRIAN & LLIZ
