Out at the front of the rally Melvyn Evans is still the man to beat, 2nd placed Mark Perrott is losing ground, and is being overhauled by David Mann, while Kenny McKinstry continues to scythe through the field.  Here at service after stage 10 Evans commented “We lost a few seconds in stage 9 when the engine developed an intermittent misfire. We changed the spark plugs at management service, and everything was fine through stage 10.”  Mark Perrott told us “I’m dropping back, there’s a front strut burst and he is bottoming out. The anti roll bar’s gone, I’m going as hard as I dare but my confidences is going as well”.  David Mann on the other hand is gaining confidence by the mile, as he beds into his newly rebuilt Subaru.  David is only a few seconds behind Mark and looks more than likely to take top Kumho ANCRO points here.

Kenny McKinstry is also on a points charge.  He was fastest by far through stages 9 and 10 and said “I’m really enjoying the rally again. The more technical the stages the better for me. The car still is not handling the best.  We changed a drive shaft at last service which didn’t leave much time for other things. We’ve set the tracking and now we need to sort the cambers”.  Stage 10 was not a great one for the Metro men – they nearly all had to reverse at the hairpin.  John Price commented “Apart from the hairpin, we’d been going well, any faster and I’ll put the car off”.

Latest retirement would appear to be Phil Colllins. After having set some fantastic times in his Mk2 Escort, he has had a crash over very fast 1 right into 1 left over bumps section and the car is going no further today.  That was in stage 9, the Braaid, the same spot, we think, where Laukkanen crashed a couple of times. This leaves John Dalton leading his class and that is despite a Rhode Island Red dicing itself through the grille of his Darrian.

Behind Dalton is Steve Hendy who has now settled into a fast pace.  Tony Davies is hanging grimly on to 8th, Tony suffering from a flu fever.  Cahal Arthurs has moved into 10th despite his Celica having anti lag problems.

News of further retirements includes….Mark Morgan pulling out following turbo trouble. John Indri has gone with gearbox maladies on his Metro. Steve Petch’s Hyundai is missing from the time sheets – reason unknown. More later. BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON                                               www.rallynews.net
