Melvyn Evans arrived in here to service after stage 8 having increased his lead over Mark Perrott and commented "Everything is going well although the tyres were starting to lose their grip before the end of that loop".  MarkPerrott commented "Not bad not bad, but it's difficult to judge how hard to go, at the end of the day I have to look after the ANCRO championship points".  (Melvyn Evans is contesting the Get Connected series).  John Price has held on to 3rd, saying "The car's good, singing and dancing over the bumps, but my tyre choice could have been better."

Phil Collins maintains 4th after a superb time in stage 8.  Phil did have a small problem in stage 6 when his Escort throttle jammed open.  As regards the stage 8 time, he said "That was our piece de resistance - down Baldwin".  David Mann is moving up the order despite still settling into his rebuilt Subaru and also adjusting suspension.  John Dalton in the Darrian had a spin in stage 2. Roger Duckworth is another in suspension trouble.  He reckons he was 10s slower through the Curraghs than 2 years ago, and in stage 8 his Subaru hit a bump wrong and threw the car into a bank.

Group N leader Bob Fowden went straight off at one corner, into a field, spun the car around and out again, dropping about 15s.  He told us he went off at the same corner 5 years ago, but the gate was closed the last time.

Kenny McKinstry set a fantastic time through stage 8, 20s faster than anyone else, but says his Subaru is "handling like a bag of s…"     Kenny is now up to 20th or thereabouts from 35th overnight.
Steve Fleck has crashed his Subaru up at Brandywell - hit the bank on a fast right hander and the car went on to it's side and broke a wheel.

Other stories include….Robert Watson setting a scorching pace in his Nova Kit Car, but told us that it is running out of revs at high speed.  Could do with a 6 speed dog box instead of the 5 cog synchro strapped on the end of the engine at the moment. Steve Hendy has been going hard over the last couple of stages.  We had Hendy 4th overnight, but he had been credited with a time 1m too fast on stage 3, although he did set fastest time in stage 4.  More news later..BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON                                                     www.rallynews.net
